Designing dining chairs can be tricky because there's literally a lot more than meets the eye (the actual construction and fill "ingredients" of the chair). There are many elements that go into making the perfect dining chair that I've discovered through trial and error over the years. The actual look, scale, and design is always the first step...but practicality, pitch, quality of fill, and comfort is just as important. I see many "knock-off" or assembly line chairs that may visually resemble a fantastic design, but at the end of the day something is off about them because their makers skimp on what you don't see. You'd be amazed how much even an 1/8 of an inch makes a difference in the right or wrong places or how quickly a sub-standard cushion can permanently "flatten".
In creating new dining chair designs, I go through many frames and prototypes before I add it to our Plush Home line. Here's a look at my checklist:
1. Must be beautiful, elegant, special
2. Must be comfortable
3. Must offer support
4. Must work for every body shape and size
5. Must be hand crafted with exceptional materials
We released this chair design in 2003 when we launched Plush Home, and the St. Denis has consistently been one of our best sellers - it's a virtual chameleon that changes its look with every fabric selection and works with many design styles. The chair comes in standard and occasional versions (the occasional has a slightly wider back for taller people....and also works well as end chairs). Like many of the names in our line, I named The St. Denis collection after a street name in Montreal (where I spent much of my childhood). Here's a look at the latest custom group for a dining room that's being shipped out this week.
